Day 10 - Brathay 10 in 10

Day 10 Brathay 10 in 10

21/05/17

The Grand Finale !!!

This years 10 in 10 was so much harder with only 14 weeks to train after my broken ankle and a couple of weeks taper things didn't quite go as planned. The training went ok and I built the miles up to a peak week of about 80 miles. I felt confident and then the week before my glute went into spasm and my leg tightened up. I went to the physio and it loosened up, but on the 1st day of the 10 it tightened up again and was quite painful in my quad. After Physio that afternoon it sort of loosened. I did a foam rolling session and a good stretch off that evening had a flush out in the morning and off I went. I don't think I got 6 mile in before my quad started hurting. It got worse and worse the further I went and I ended up walking the last 4 mile. The doubts were coming thick and fast. Not enough training, not gonna finish, but I gave myself a good talking too and made it back. That evening $ physio's worked on me all together it was horrendous. I remember Adam saying something to the effect I was made of granite. He got stuck in my quad and IT band and it hurt so much I ended up with a sore throat from screaming. Straight after I went in the ice bath. It worked as from that day I just got stronger finishing with my fastest.

Day 10 started early I went to the treatment room Laura and Martyna were already there. I took my ipod with some upbeat dance music on to liven me up and gave the girls a little pressie I'd got for them. I was sat up getting my quads done when Adam came in with a team camera dude t-shirt on, i'd managed to compose myself till then, but I felt a big lump in my throat and my eyes were welling up. Laura asked me if I was ok and I said yes and tried to focus on the music and managed to get myself settled. I went back up to shackleton for a shower and had a little blub when I was on my own and then was ok. I went back for taping then headed down to the Athletes room. Soon it was time to head to the lawn for our huddle and lucy did a speech which brought tears to all our eyes, this was it everything we had all been through together and remembering our good friend Martin Campbell better known camera dude. Our lap of honour was upon us.

The run started on the drive today and before long we were off in the rain. It wasn't windy and was still quite warm. I didn't have a jacket on and was totally enjoying the cool rain bouncing off my skin. My foot was sore but I knew it would ease up. The adrenaline was pumping through me and I just wanted the 1st 4 mile over. Once I got to Hawkshead, running up some of the hills I'd walked, I settled into a nice steady pace and soaked up the views and smells for the last time. Because it had rained everything smelled fresh, the flowers, trees and garlic but not the dead badger near mile 10 that stunk really bad yuk. As I was nearing Newby bridge I heard the whistle of the steam train, then I saw the smoke through the trees, then it was alongside me and it just beat me to the bridge but it left the distinct smell of smoke behind. Reminds me when my dad used to take us to steam town when we were kids and we used to stand on the footbridge when the steam trains went under. Happy days!!! From there I turned the corner and was cheered along outside the swan, shouts of well done and keep going. I ran past the water station at fell foot and headed straight for the box in the layby. The marshals were great offering out sweets and water and electrolyte and cheering you on. Next I plodded up the rollercoaster for the last time. I don't know if it was the adrenaline or the fact that the weather was cool but I actually ran halfway up the big hills I felt strong today. There was loads of beeps and support out too, it gives you such a boost. 16 mile in and the marshal shouted up the hill what's your name so I shouted sonja so he got my bottle for me I swapped bottles with him thanked him and carried on. Just before I got to 17 mile the pace car came up for the Brathay windermere marathon and for all of about 3 mins I was leading the marathon. The first man came past and shouted well done to me, he was just bounding along, he disappeared round the corner and I folled him. At mile 18 kev was there and handed me my bottle without my label, I saw him take it off and wondered what he was doing. Later I found out that he had attached the 10 in 10 runners labels to a tree. Next box was at Bowness, just before you drop down onto the front. All week tourist have just not noticed you were there. A couple of days 1 of the boat guys shouted out to me as I ran past, but today it was awesome everyone was on there feet cheering as I ran past it made me feel really good. At some point Sally Ford the 1st female and a runner in the camera dude team ran past shouting well done as she went by. Wish I had her legs lol. I headed to ice-cream mountain and Mac was at the top waiting to give me my bottle. Only 4 1/2 mile left. I focussed on getting 1 foot in front of the other and just keep going. The emotions were starting to surface and the tears began to flow, I was doing this for local children and I was going to complete it. Every penny I raised was helping disadvantaged and vulnerable children all the pain was worth it. I kept going took my drink out of the box at 24 mile and walked down the hill drinking it. I set off running again to more beeping horns and shouts of encouragement I crossed over the foot bridge and tickled the otters belly for the last time then set off running up the hill and towards Brathay. I walked partly up the drive then ran the rest took a deep breath at the top and ran down to the finish line. The crowd was amazing and I could feel the tears coming I focused on the finish line and punched the air. I felt fantastic, 3 Brathay 10 in 10's, a hatrick,  nearly £18,000 raised. I'd done it. My family were there waiting hugs and tears all round and a big hug off Aly. She is the backbone of this event, a beautiful person with a heart of gold and huge hugs. Thankyou for helping me believe in myself.

Big hugs with all my friends as I headed to the Athletes room for a good stretch out with Martyna and Laura, shower then beer tent for a well earned beer. We had the presentation with Joss Naylor and he told me I was an inspiration, get that from the man himself. He is an awesome dude. After the presentation I chilled out on the lawn with my friends and family until we had to get ready for the celebration dinner.

I would just like to thank Aly, Mac, Paul, Jimbo, Chris, My fellow runners, my physio's Laura and Martyna, Adam and Katie and all the other physio's who were a great bunch, everyone who supported me throughout the 10 days, everyone who donated to my just giving page, everyone who donated cash, prizes, cakes, bought cakes, raffle tickets, horses and jockey's and everyone else who supported me throughout my training, Becky lewis & David Jackson, fundraising and the event you are all awesome and I couldn't have done it without you. We have done the kids proud.

Day 9 -Brathay 10 in 10

Day 9 Brathay 10 in 10

20/05/17

Today has been a mix of emotions. With lots of families, friends and runners arriving for the marathon and to cheer us on tomorrow on our lap of honour. It was quite emotional this morning to find our Bob had decided not to carry o through injury, but a wise choice. I Literally just switched off to shut out the feelings and was finding it difficult to look at the other runners who were clearly emotional too. God knows what we are all going to be like tomorrow I can already feel myself welling up writing this.
I was in the physio room for 7 this morning and the girls were there already
waiting so we got started straight away. My glutes as always were bit tight and they wasted no time getting stuck in and it bloody hurt aargh. The rest of the back of my legs were fine. Quads were not as bad as normal, shins and adductors were painful and we put ice on my foot as its still pretty swollen. Not sure what's going on there but it does go numb after about 10mile till I come down into Bowness then it starts again.

Todays run started fairly well, gritted teeth as each time I put my foot down it really hurt. After a mile or so I got used to the pain and after about 10 mile it seemed to disappear. It was nice and cool today but quite a strong headwind in places made it tough going. The panthers my running group were out in force today and it was lovely to see them and hear them . Thanks guys. The 10 in 10 family were out in force too. Thank you guys. I was running pretty ok trying to stay focused. I had a couple of emotional moments when I was thinking about the camera dude, but I stayed mostly focused. When I got to Bowness. It started to rain quite heavy and all of a sudden I got attacked by brollies and had to jump onto the road. Flipping nearly took my eyes out grrr It seemed everyone put their brolly up at the same time, didn't even bother looking to see who was there. Later as I was running to cross the wide rd at troutbeck just before the garage a women in a car stopped right in front of me, I was already halfway across, she didn't stop to let me go or pull up to the junction so I could run behind she just stopped dead in front of me and I had to stop or run into her. She looked at me right in the face didn't even acknowledge me. Some people are just ignorant !!! I ran most of the way back after that walking a couple times on the hills and finished day 9 in 5:07 fastest so far.

The girls stretched me off while I was eating chicken and chips then all of us got in the ice bath for a hat fest. Then Jimmy joined us. We had a good old sing song and boy was the icebath deep with four in. Again the girls went to town on my glutes. When we finished up vic ash showed me another way to torture Adam then I got a nice hot shower, did my bottles for the lap of honour then met dave so we could go in for tea together. Bring on tomorrow lets get this done !!!

Day 8 Brathay 10 in 10

Day 8 Brathay 10 in 10

19/05/17

Today I got up bright and early and was down physio for 6.30am. This was because I was being interviewed by radio cumbria. I made myself a brew and hobbled down the path to the treatment room. Laura and Martyna were waiting and it wasn't long before they both got stuck into me.The Bee sting I got yesterday was still very sore and when they were pressing on my leg it hurt quite a bit.1 1/2 hrs later I headed down to the main hall for my interview. After that I got a shower and went back up the treatment room for some stretching and taping then back to the athletes room for the morning ritual.

The run itself was ok I think I had a good run. It was nice and breezy during the 1st half  I really enjoyed it, I felt comfortable after about 10 mile when my foot went numb, I was taking in all the sights and sounds of the country side. what a beautiful place this is. When I rounded the end of the lake at Newby bridge the breeze had suddenly disappeared and it became really hot. I walked up/ran down the roller coaster and ran the rest. The views at the top were amazing at about 18 mile I could see the steamer on the lake and it looked stunning. I carried on through Bowness with a few shouts from the guys that work on the boats and kept going to ice cream mountain where Byron was at the top waiting for me along with Dave and Natalie. I found the rest a bit of a drag up to Ambleside and I could see the lake and Brathay hall in the distance. Stunning views. I walked up the hill to the traffic lights, turned left and ran round to the bridge which I walked over saying Hi to the otter on the other side and tickling his belly. I finished in 5:20 today and there was lots of people at the finish line waiting to give me hugs. It was great to see, Penny, Jack, Lesley, davey, Caroline, Craig, Sue, Paul and rob all 10 in 10 ers in their own right.

After stretching, 15 min in the icebath beckoned so I joined Jimmy for a short while. The girls got stuck right in after on the table. No mercy policy I think lol. They are doing brill getting me out there and back every day Thanks xx Shower, bottles, tea then ice on the feet while I blog before bed.

Day 7 - Brathay 10 in 10

Day 7 - Brathay 10 in 10

18/05/17

Today started pretty much the same as every other day. Up early, eggs on, toast then down to Physio at 7am. The girls were waiting patiently as I hobbled down in my flip flops as the top of my foot is still swollen and sore. Another warm day by the look of it. I walked in and they had made a lovely 50th chart and had even put a play list together of my favourite songs. It didn't stop them getting stuck in though aaargh a bit of pillow biting this morning. After they had stretched me off I went back up for a shower, ate my eggs and got a lift back down for taping, before heading to the athletes room to get ready and chill.

I walked down to the start with my roomy Janet we had near enough matching knee tape lol. The run itself was ok very hot but I coped with it a bit better after I took a antihistamine this am. It was a fun run today playing cat and mouse with bob think we kept each other entertained and going.

It was nice to see lots of supporters around the course and the support team shouting 50 at me. Its a bit crazy because I never even thought about doing so many marathons and then all of a sudden I've done fifty I felt amazing when I finished today even though I was hurting all over I knew Martyna and Laura would do their best for me even if it meant a bout of pain. yet again I wanted to jump in the lake as I ran past at about 2mile to the finish. Two swans were paddling on the edge it looked so inviting. I dug deep and carried on eyeing up the river as I passed. Up the drive to the finish. 7 days down 50 marathons complete some friends to greet me at the end. Hi Penny, sue and Caroline great to see you all. It was fab to see my Bestie jen at fell foot today too.

The ice bath yeah it was fab do I really have to get out lol. Physio was painful, especially the adductors and shins but I know its for my own good. After tea I put yest blog up then went to do bottles. On the way up Trudi spotted a deer a small 1 but I managed to get a pic . Thanks again to everyone, texts, messages, fb, our Physio's and support team for all your hard work and support .

Day 6 - Brathay 10 in 10

Day 6 – Brathay 10 in 10

16/05/17

I got up this morning feeling tired I went down for breakfast, put my eggs on, had a brew and some toast then headed down for physio.  On my way down it was really quiet except for the birds singing. Sounded like they were serenading me lol. I’d been down there for a while and Angela came in and said, how well done do you like your eggs? Oops I’d left them on and while they were sat having breakfast they started exploding good job they were there. After physio I came back up and the lovely jimbo had made me fresh 1’s  and Paul told me told me there was a deer out the back so managed to get a pic.I got a shower and went back for taping before heading to the athletes room.

The run itself was painful to start but when I got in to a comfy pace it wasn’t that bad until just after I got past Newby Bridge in the open I felt like I’d just walked onto the poolside at work it was really humid, hot and stuffy and I was really hot. It was nice to see dave, Natalie and my grandsons and Jenny out on the course and at the finish, but it was 1 hell of a hard slog I just felt like I couldn’t cool down it was horrid I just wanted to get it over with and was so glad when I did. What stopped me jumping in the lake I don’t know all I wanted to do was get in the ice bath so after a big hug off Aly a cuddle and kiss off my grandsons I went to stretch.
The ice bath felt so good today I stayed in for 15min then Laura and Martyna put me through some pain in the torture chamber err I mean physio room. After which I had the pleasure of getting my own back on Adam with my elbow in his IT band which I videoed. I will post this on facebook and you  can all see him squeal if someone donates to my just giving page with the message ADAM on it is so funny.

Anyway day 6 done my feet need to be elevated and iced.
I'm knackered and just want to sleep.

Day 5 - Brathay 10 in 10

Day 5 - Brathay 10 in 10

16/05/17

I had a bit of a restless night last night, foot was hurting, had to dash, ok hobble to loo at 2am. I went back to bed and woke up about 5:50 10 mins before alarm was due to go off. I went and made a brew, some toast, boiled some eggs and headed down for Physio. It wasn't long before the place was buzzing with life some very special ladies popped in. Hang on wait a minute it was the boys lol. Today was ladies day and all the guys including Adam had a very good try at making themselves into ladies for the day. They did a good job too. After Physio I went back to shackleton for a shower, ate my eggs and headed back for taping. Today as well as the tape on my leg and bum I had some on my foot as it was still sore and swollen. I then went down to the athletes room for my daily ritual, talc in socks, Vaseline in all the places you can't see, no. on shirt, cup of tea, cap and belt on. I suddenly realised Malcolm had pulled out and my emotions just took over I felt gutted for him, my eyes welled up and before I knew it Jim was next to me giving me a hug, then Aly came over and gave me a hug and said to me what I kind of already knew that it was in his best interests etc. I took a couple of deep breathes and composed myself before heading down to the start line.

Todays run started in pain and I was feeling emotional It took me a good few miles to get my head in gear. After seeing Malc smiling a couple of time on the course I settled down, head sorted and focused on the job in hand. The support crew have been great today they always make you laugh. Thanks guys. We started the run in rain and I put my lightweight waterproof on by mile 6 it was off. Although it was wet it was very warm. When I got to box 4 kev was there he had had to pull out I was gutted for him too I had to keep focused and keep going. It cleared for a while and I was just plodding along when my mum and dad pulled up in the car. It was great to see them , just what I needed they carried on along the road and joined Jim at box 8 It was so nice to see them and get a hug before heading off for the last 10 mile. My foot hurt on and off but was ok. Untill I stopped that is. I saw jimmy ahead of me quite a few times and although we weren't together it actually felt like I had company. Todays run was pretty much ok a few emotional moments but all good.

The ice bath was great 15 mins and plenty of queen songs to sing lol. The Physio was painful at times but its worth it. I didn't want to get out of the hot shower tonight either. Thanks Jimmy and Janet for helping with my bottles. Think I will have an early night to night I feel a bit tired.

Day 4 - BRATHAY 10 in 10

Day 4 - Brathay 10 in 10

15/05/17

I woke up this morning feeling shattered and my foot was a bit sore on top. I had actually had the best sleep I'd had all wkend. I got up at 6am, sorted bag, down to kitchen, boiled eggs, had slice of toast then took my brew down to Physio in the pouring rain. After I'd had my rub down with Martyna and Laura I went back up to Shackleton, had shower, ate eggs and trek bar then went down for taping before chilling in the Athletes room.

Todays run was extremely wet, it rained all day, we had a head wind out to Newby Bridge and then all the way back to Ambleside grrr. It was lovely to see Jonathon, Sharon, David and Mark during the 1st half then Jacqui & Neil at fell foot it certainly perks you up when everyone is cheering you on. Thanks for all the beeps and shouts too keep them coming. The support crew are amazing they always seem to put a smile on your face or me them lol. I had to flag Mac and Jim down for Vaseline to put between my butt cheeks to stop chaffing because I was soaking wet through. They were good enough to turn their backs with Mac shouting something to the effect of " nothing going on here" cos there was a guy walking up the rd. lol. Later on I was minding my own business, jogging along, singing really loud when a car pulled up and it was Ally think she thought I'd lost the plot 😉. They are brill though, standing in the rain holding a brolly over you while you drink your energy drink. I had to stop 3 times today. 1 for a pee, 2 to take a stone out of my shoe because I somehow managed to kick 1 in & 3 another stone in the other shoe this time. Talking of stones some lovely person had painted some stones to look like animals and left them on walls around the course. I saw a fish, cow, bee, allsorts they were great. The top of my foot was feeling more and more sore as the day went on so I was looking forward to the ice bath. I had a flush out tonight on the massage table and I think at 1 point I was that relaxed I nodded off. Woken by someone tickling my feet hmm. My strava didn't work today I must have somehow pressed stop while trying to get in my pocket. I ran 5:32 today not a bad run, a tired run but another day done .
